Thune Statement on Senate-Passed Bill to Sanction North Korea: Must Counter Hostility With Strength

“By passing legislation that levels sanctions against North Korea and those who aid the rogue regime, the Senate is taking a necessary step to protect the United States and our allies.”

WASHINGTON —  Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.), chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, released the following statement after Senate passage of the bipartisan North Korea Sanctions Enforcement Act of 2016, which seeks to curb North Korea’s aggressive behavior through the implementation of targeted sanctions.

“North Korea has a long-established pattern of aggression, openly engaging in missile tests, nuclear bomb tests, and cyberattacks that threaten our allies and our own national security. Kim Jong Un’s hostility must be countered with strength. By passing legislation that levels sanctions against North Korea and those who aid the rogue regime, the Senate is taking a necessary step to protect the United States and our allies.”
