Ensign: Congress Must Act To Encourage Renewable Energy

Washington, D.C. – Senator John Ensign released the following statement as a new report is released that projects 440,000 permanent jobs would be created if Congress passes a critical tax incentive to encourage the development of solar energy:

“In order to move our country away from Middle Eastern oil, Congress needs to put in place the right incentives to encourage renewable sources of energy such as solar, wind, geothermal and more. Today’s study shows that this can not only put us on a path toward energy independence but also boost our economy by creating hundreds of thousands of jobs.

“That’s why I have worked with Senator Maria Cantwell to make sure that Congress can bridge the partisan divide and pass these critical tax incentives. I will continue to work with my colleagues and leadership from both sides of the aisle to ensure that we can achieve this goal before we adjourn. The study released today is further evidence of the need for action.”

Included below are additional details of the Navigant Consulting study regarding the benefits of extending the Investment Tax Credit to encourage the development of solar energy:

  • Create 440,000 permanent jobs, 9,000 of which would be in Nevada;
  • Could result in 1.2 million total jobs across the country and throughout the economy;
  • Produce more than 28 gigawatts of energy, enough to power 7 million homes
