Thune Urges Democrats to Abandon Plans to Filibuster Funding for Troops

Issues statement in advance of vote today

WASHINGTON — U.S. Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.) issued the following statement in advance of a vote today on the Department of Defense appropriations bill.

“It’s incredible that Senate Democrats would consider blocking a bill that funds our troops at the levels they agreed to just last week,” Thune said. “If the reports of a planned filibuster are true, then my Democratic colleagues are willing to risk the safety and security of our armed forces for vague reasons they have yet to fully explain. Senate Republicans have worked in good faith with the Democrats to keep this bill moving forward.  Democrats must now do their part and abandon this cynical strategy immediately.”

The FY 2016 defense appropriations bill, which garnered broad bipartisan support in committee, complies with the two-year budget deal Congress passed just last week.
