WASHINGTON — The Senate Republican Conference, chaired by U.S. Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.), today released a video featuring Sen. Deb Fischer (R-Neb.) and the work she has done over the past four years to advance paid family leave. The video is released as Senate Republicans continue to highlight how the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act benefits the American people. Sen. Fischer’s paid family leave provision was included in the tax reform legislation signed into law in December.
“This plan is really historic. It is a big deal for working women and their families. You know, I have been working on a paid family leave policy for four years now.
“Families have unique needs, and we need to help them with that — offer a good plan. It is the first federal policy for paid family leave, and Sen. Deb Fischer is, in part, responsible for it, as she introduced the legislation.
“It is the first United States nationwide paid family leave policy. It is important because it offers flexibility for different types of families to meet their different needs.
“Whether that is taking care of a sick child or caring for an elderly parent, this policy is going to help families have that flexibility that they need to care for their loved ones.
“There is so much to juggle in life, and a plan like this is really going to help people really address the needs that effect their lives.
“It’s just so important that we target people who don’t have access to paid family leave, and that is why this is voluntary program that we now have in place is going to be something that is going to work, and it’s going to benefit these people.
“I am Sen. Deb Fischer, and I get to represent the state of Nebraska in the United States Senate.”
